Basic art skills with a strong desire to work hard and improve is enough to get you started.
It doesn’t hurt to become certified, but it’s not necessary. If you’re interested in becoming a Certified Forensic Artist, The International Association for Identification offers a Forensic Art Certification program. Their requirements can be found at https://www.theiai.org/forensic_art.php.
Our courses are not currently recognized by the I.A.I. and do not count towards certification.
There are about a dozen full-time forensic artists in North America. A majority of forensic artists have primary jobs in law enforcement like, police officer, detective, crime scene investigator, crime analyst, etc. Others freelance or volunteer their services. Your best opportunity is to work in law enforcement. Many have been successful as freelance forensic artists. So, it’s not an impossible task.
There will definitely some impact. We encourage you to become familiar with software-driven solutions for creating facial composites and the various image creation AI programs that are available. At the SketchCop Academy, we view these as work flow and quality control tools. The more you know, the more valuable a resource you become.
